Meeting with the President of Syria – HE Bashar Al Assad

We have already received an invitation to meet with HE Bashar Al Assad, president of the Arab Republic of Syria, during our stay in this country. The hosts emphasized that this was a great distinction on the part of the president, because recently representatives of several EU countries met with refusal of requests for a meeting.

It was nice to hear that it was a gesture of recognition for our activity to promote dialogue and economic cooperation between Poland (a key Central European country) and the Middle East region.

Naturally, the meeting with the president of the Syrian Arab Republic has become the main item on the agenda of our mission. The possibility of more than an hour’s direct conversation with HE Bashar Al Assad was de facto spent on social priorities. The president turned out to be a very open man, an attentive listener and a competent interlocutor. Therefore, we had the opportunity to verify at source the opinion as to whether the country is able to take back its own citizens, who took refuge mainly in nearby Lebanon.
